CARA Community Health Mobile Platform
Inland Empire Health Plan serves over a million members across Southern California and is committed to improving community health outcomes through preventative care and accessible health resources.
To support this mission, IEHP partnered with Sidebench to design and build CARA, a mobile platform that empowers members to engage more actively in their health and wellness.
The platform connects users with community-based organizations, educational resources, and local health programs that address social determinants of health. Members can discover wellness events, track personal health information, and access curated health education tailored to their needs.
CARA also integrates health data and provides tools that help IEHP understand member engagement and community needs, enabling more targeted health programs.
By transforming traditional health plan services into a mobile-first experience, CARA helps IEHP improve access to care, strengthen community engagement, and support healthier lifestyles for its members.
Baby Steps NICU Parent Support Mobile App
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles sought to improve the experience for parents whose newborns were transitioning from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to home care. Research revealed that the discharge process can be overwhelming for families, making it difficult to retain important medical guidance and care instructions.
Sidebench collaborated with CHLA’s pediatric research team to conduct user research with clinicians and parents to better understand their needs during this critical transition period.
Using these insights, the team designed and developed Baby Steps, a mobile application that provides parents with personalized care guidance, educational resources, and reminders to help them manage their baby’s health after leaving the hospital.
The app simplifies complex medical information into accessible guidance, empowering parents to confidently care for their newborns. The project received national recognition, including the American Hospital Association Innovation Challenge award and honors from Fast Company and the W3 Awards.
Baby Steps demonstrates how thoughtful digital design can improve healthcare experiences for families during vulnerable moments.
Digital Therapy Platform for OCD Treatment
NOCD is a digital mental health platform focused on providing evidence-based treatment for individuals living with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The organization sought to build a scalable digital platform that would improve access to specialized therapy while supporting long-term patient engagement.
Sidebench worked closely with NOCD to design and develop a mobile and web-based platform that supports therapy delivery, community engagement, and behavioral health tracking. The product includes structured onboarding experiences, patient engagement tools, and digital resources that support exposure and response prevention (ERP), the gold standard therapy for OCD.
Through thoughtful UX design and product strategy, the platform helps patients connect with licensed therapists, track progress, and access peer support within a trusted community environment.
The digital platform played a critical role in expanding access to specialized OCD treatment while strengthening NOCD’s ability to support a rapidly growing patient population.
Time2Connect Foster Care Visitation Management Platform
Family visitation is a critical component of the foster care system, helping maintain relationships between children and their families while supporting long-term reunification goals. However, coordinating these visits across social workers, caregivers, facilities, and court requirements often involved complex scheduling processes and manual administrative work.
Sidebench partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services to design and build Time2Connect, a digital platform that centralizes visitation scheduling and coordination.
The platform enables social workers, caregivers, and service providers to manage visitation logistics more efficiently while ensuring that visits occur reliably and in compliance with court requirements.
By streamlining communication and scheduling across multiple stakeholders, Time2Connect reduces administrative overhead and allows social workers to spend more time supporting children and families directly.
The system plays a critical role in improving operational transparency and coordination within one of the largest child welfare systems in the United States.
Digital Health Scoring and Personalized Care Platform
The American Heart Association is one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to fighting heart disease and improving public health through research, education, and community initiatives.
To help translate clinical insights into actionable digital experiences, Sidebench collaborated with AHA to design and develop digital tools that enable individuals to better understand and manage their health.
The platform includes a digital health screening system that evaluates user health indicators and generates a personalized health score. Based on this score, the system produces tailored care plans designed to guide individuals through a structured 12-week health improvement journey.
The solution was designed as a cross-platform experience accessible on both mobile and desktop environments, enabling both healthcare professionals and individuals to engage with preventative health tools.
By transforming scientific research into accessible digital experiences, the platform helps individuals take proactive steps toward improving their cardiovascular health and overall well-being.
Selfsea Youth Digital Health Community Platform
Peer Health Exchange is a nonprofit organization focused on advancing health equity for young people across the United States. As the organization expanded its programs, it identified an opportunity to extend its impact through digital channels that could reach youth beyond traditional classroom settings.
Sidebench worked with the Peer Health Exchange team to conduct product discovery, user research, and design workshops with youth stakeholders. These insights informed the development of Selfsea, a digital platform designed to provide accessible health education, moderated community discussions, and peer mentorship opportunities.
The platform prioritizes accessibility, inclusivity, and youth-centered design principles, ensuring that content and community features resonate with diverse young audiences. Sidebench developed development-ready designs, technical planning, and a product roadmap to support the platform’s long-term growth.
By translating Peer Health Exchange’s in-person programs into a scalable digital platform, Selfsea helps expand access to reliable health resources and supportive communities for young people nationwide.
OfficeSafe Compliance Platform Redesign
PCIHIPAA provides compliance-as-a-service solutions that help healthcare providers navigate complex regulatory requirements. However, the company’s core product, OfficeSafe, had evolved into a fragmented experience that made it difficult for users to efficiently manage compliance tasks across their organizations.
Sidebench began with customer journey mapping and product discovery workshops to understand the workflows used by compliance administrators and healthcare practice managers. Through this process, the team identified key friction points that increased manual work and created barriers to product adoption.
We redesigned the OfficeSafe platform with a focus on user experience, streamlined navigation, and improved reporting capabilities. The new platform architecture also supported scalable integrations with practice management systems and other healthcare software tools used by provider organizations.
In addition to redesigning the product experience, Sidebench helped define a long-term product roadmap that positioned PCIHIPAA for growth as a technology-enabled compliance platform. The transformation significantly reduced manual compliance workflows and strengthened the company’s competitive position in the healthcare compliance market.
AXON Smart Scheduling Platform for Autism Therapy Clinics
Cortica delivers multidisciplinary care for children with autism and developmental differences, combining neurology, behavioral therapy, and medical services in a single care model. However, the operational complexity of coordinating multiple therapies, clinicians, locations, and insurance requirements created major scheduling bottlenecks and long waitlists for patients.
Sidebench conducted deep operational research with clinical staff and administrative teams to understand how scheduling decisions were being made across multiple disconnected systems. Based on these insights, we designed and developed AXON, a proprietary smart scheduling platform that algorithmically matches patients with providers across therapy types, availability, insurance requirements, and clinic resources.
The system integrates with major healthcare platforms including AthenaHealth and CentralReach while also supporting billing, patient enrollment, clinical documentation, and care plan management. By automating previously manual scheduling workflows and centralizing data across systems, AXON enabled Cortica to dramatically improve operational efficiency.
The result was a technology-enabled care platform that helped Cortica scale rapidly while improving patient access to therapy. Waitlists dropped from months to under 30 days, millions of appointments were coordinated through the platform, and Cortica expanded from a single clinic to a multi-location provider network.
